Work starts on site at Beacon School, Walmer

We are delighted to have started enabling works on site at the Beacon School, Walmer.

This redevelopment of the Beacon School (formerly Walmer Science College) for Kent County Council will provide a new all-through provision for pupils with a primary SEN diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Phase 1 was completed by us in 2021, and consisted of the refurbishment of the existing Compass Centre building, providing for 40 pupils across Early Years and KS1.

This next phase will redevelop the rest of the site to provide state-of-the-art education facilities for SEN pupils aged 3-16.

The work includes the demolition of the original 1960s main building, deemed as no longer fit for the purpose of delivery of the current curriculum. In its place, a completely new L-shaped building consisting of two wings will be constructed, together with associated car parking and external learning spaces.

Extensive refurbishment of a series of existing buildings will be carried out to provide a number of specialist teaching rooms, social, administrative and support spaces, new kitchen and dining facilities, and a sports hall, gym and changing areas.

The finished project will transform the facilities on offer for the pupils, creating a state-of-the-art purpose-built provision to ensure the successful delivery of the curriculum for all.
