Ramsgate 3 Margate 3 - WW Martin Isle of Thanet Challenge Cup

The WW Martin Thanet Challenge Cup between Ramsgate FC and Margate FC last night ended all square with the match drawn 3-3.

The local Thanet Derby, which was keenly contested gave local football fans a chance to enjoy Thanet's two senior sides battling for WW Martin's Thanet Challenge Cup.

It was the Rams who were first off the blocks, with new signing Rory Smith flicking the ball to the left to Tom Chapman just after a minute had passed, with his cousin driving the ball into the top corner.
The Rams’ second came about 10 minutes later, and on this occasion it was 18 year old Smith who found the back of the net.

In the 20th minute Margate were awarded a penalty, which was converted to narrow the gap to 2-1, but two minutes later and Alfie Paxman made it 3-1 to the Rams, which is how the score remained until the interval.

The second half saw Margate piling on the pressure, but it wasn’t until the 74th minute that Frannie Collin managed to slot one home for the visitors in a crowded area. The Rams kept pressing though, and it should have been game over with 5 minute to go when Paxman rounded visiting ‘keeper Lenny Pidgeley, but somehow his cross-goal shot on the turn went just outside the far post.

But it was not to be, and after the game went into stoppage time another scramble in the Rams’ goalmouth saw Margate grab a very late equaliser. Shortly after Margate’s centre-forward Alex Flisher appeared to turn awkwardly and injure his knee, and with play stopped and Flisher eventually stretchered off after a few minutes the referee blew the final whistle, with the two sides deciding to share the Cup with honours even.

Although the cup was shared, sponsors WW Martin voted Ramsgate's Rory Smith as Man of the Match (pictured).
