First wildlife tower on the Silverhand Estate completed

We were delighted to visit the Silverhand Estate in Luddesdown recently, for the ceremonial opening of MDCV UK Limited's first completed wildlife tower.

Constructed by our Special Projects team, this exciting scheme will eventually see six towers placed throughout this English winery estate, offering nesting and hibernation opportunities for a range of wildlife.

Built from flint dug by hand from the surrounding vineyards, together with reclaimed brick and Kent peg tiles salvaged from the estate, the towers blend seamlessly into their beautiful surroundings. Oak-framed roofs and doors were made in-house by our highly-skilled carpenters.

The towers have been designed to offer habitats for a wide variety of wildlife. They contain internal nesting boxes – hot on the south side for encouraging nesting and breeding, cold on the north side for hibernation. Different boxes have been provided for kestrels, barn owls, little owls and bats.

Niches between the flint have been left for butterflies, insects and bees to nest. Some towers will contain their own beehives, encouraging local pollination efforts.

MDCV UK Ltd is committed to promoting conservation, sustainability and biodiversity throughout its activities, and said of the towers,

“This initiative underscores our dedication to creating a harmonious coexistence between our vineyards and the natural world around us.

We believe in treading lightly on the earth and leaving a positive impact for future generations to enjoy.

Thank you to WW Martin and National Highways for helping to bring these towers to life.”
