Project Award: Giles Lane Student Accommodation, Canterbury
We are delighted to announce that we have been appointed by Student Lux Ltd to deliver a new purpose-built student accommodation development at the former Franciscan Study Centre on Giles Lane, Canterbury.
Working alongside OSG ARCHITECTURE LTD, b&m | Certified B Corp as Quantity Surveyor and Contract Administrator, BSF Consulting Engineers as Structural and Civil Engineer, and QuinnRoss as MEP Engineer, the project will transform the site to provide high-quality, modern student accommodation.
The development comprises the construction of two new three-storey accommodation blocks (Blocks A and B), providing 99 student bedrooms in a mix of self-contained studios and cluster apartments. In addition, the existing two-storey Block D will undergo a substantial refurbishment to create a further 28 student bedrooms, bringing the total accommodation to 127 bedrooms.
The scheme will also include a range of shared student amenities, including communal kitchens, lounge areas, post and parcel facilities, and laundry rooms, creating a welcoming and well-equipped living environment for students.
Constructed using traditional methods, the development will feature attractive brick façades and aluminium windows, with photovoltaic (PV) panels incorporated to improve the building's energy performance. The project will be delivered in accordance with current Building Regulations and is targeting a BREEAM 'Very Good' rating, reflecting its strong sustainability credentials.
External works will include carefully designed hard and soft landscaping that complements the adjacent woodland setting, helping to enhance the character of the site while providing attractive outdoor spaces for students.
