WW Martin work with the KM Charity Team and Kent schools

As part of our commitment to working with and supporting local communities, we joined forces with the KM Charity Team and Kent Cricket to stage a special challenge to select a child from the pupils involved in the KM Charity’s Green Travel campaign to be named Kent Cricket Mascot for the day.

With hundreds of classes taking part in the challenge, the class that completed the most or most improved number of walks to school as part of the charity’s Wow (Walk on Wednesday) scheme, received an entry voucher for every pupil that took part. From here, one lucky pupil was then drawn at random to win the prize to be Kent Cricket mascot, enabling them and their family to visit the Spitfire ground at Canterbury as VIPs on 29th May.

Oliver Glewis, a Year 3 pupil at Whitstable Junior School, was the lucky winner to be named Kent Cricket mascot for the day at Canterbury’s St Lawrence Ground after winning the green travel challenge. Oliver who walks to school everyday got to meet the Kent Spitfires squad at the match against Somerset and receive a signed bat from Captain Sam Billings, a Kent Cricket Royal London Shirt before joining both Captains on the pitch to toss the coin to see who would bat first.

As part of the prize, £250 worth of books will also go to Whitstable Junior School, donated by WW Martin.

The Walk to School initiative running in Kent is used each week by 42,000 children and families at 135 primary schools. This generates 700,000 green journeys and removes more than 300,000 school-run car journeys from the county's roads annually. This specific challenge was in support of WOW, an initiative which encourages families to walk, cycle, or ‘park and stride’ for the school run at least once a week in Kent.
