Description

Our three-year, multi-million-pound expansion of the Emergency Department at QEQM Hospital, Margate for East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust has come to an end as the final area was handed over to the clinical team.

This most recent phase included two new resuscitation bays which were the last areas to be finished as part of the project. This expanded the total number of new resus bays to seven.

Previous phases of work remodelled the whole department, with a two-storey expansion filling a former courtyard, helping to create much-needed space to provide an array of new clinical, staff and patient facilities. Specifically, these included a rapid assessment and treatment unit, dedicated mental health facilities, children’s emergency department, new entrance and waiting areas, staff facilities, and a new treatment area for adults including relatives’ room.

Joanna Williams, head of nursing for urgent and emergency care at the QEQM, showed reporters from BBC South East today, ITV Meridian and Greatest Hits Radio around the new department last week. She said:

“We are thrilled to bits with the new department, and it is a joy to work in. Each area has been designed with staff and patients in mind, to ensure everything we need is close at hand and the patients are comfortable.
“It has been a long road and I’m very grateful to our fantastic staff who have continued to do their best for our patients as our department was remodelled around us.”

We are very proud to have delivered these significant expansion works at the QEQM Hospital in partnership with all our project team partners - HMY Architects, 2gether Support Solutions, Sweco, Modus, Gardiner & Theobald and many more. .
